The Staffordshire Police Work Experience Insights programme is an annual programme aimed at students who are interested in a career in policing.

The programme is open to applicants who are in Year 10 in school and in Year 12/13 in either school or college (post-16 education) and who live or are educated in Staffordshire.

The programme is a week-long commitment, with an in-person attendance required, held at our Police Headquarters in Stafford in the month of June. The specific dates are provided below:

  • For College Students:
    Dates: Monday 15th June – Friday 19th June 2026
  • For Year 10 Students:
    Dates: Monday 29th June – Friday 3rd July 2026

Those accepted onto the programme will need to be dropped off and collected daily from our Police Headquarters, use public transport or drive to site.

The programme will involve different departments presenting interactive inputs to challenge and engage attendees which will improve their knowledge and understanding of what police do, as well as showing them the different opportunities available and complexities of policing today.

How to apply

Due to the number of people who may wish to participate, an application form outlining why you want to be part of the programme, and what your interests, passions and achievements are, will need to be completed. A guidance document outlining what we are looking for, is attached below to assist you in making an application.

Completing an application form is an essential step in the job search process, and is a requirement when applying for roles within the police service. This application will provide you with an opportunity to explain why you are interested in the placement and how your skills and interests make you a suitable candidate for a place on the programme. It will also provide you with practice in completing recruitment application forms.

We are aware that the one-week programme we offer may fall outside of the usual school or college allocated work experience dates, however contact with a number of schools and colleges across the county showed that the majority of schools would support their students in attending the programme if they wished to apply. We are unable to accommodate any other requests at other times in the year due to operational capacity and impact.

We have provided some common FAQs below to answer any other questions in relation to the programme. If there are any other questions that are not answered by this document, please email workexpereince@staffordshire.police.uk

The week is designed to provide students with an insight into many areas of operational policing; including police dogs, investigations, roads policing, firearms, forensics, and 999 call taking. For those students that are accepted onto the programme, a detailed timetable of activity will be provided in advance of the week with confirmation around arrangements for each day (lunch arrangements, what to wear, timings etc).

No. Unfortunately due to operational capacity and risk we are unable to accommodate any other requests for work experience outside of the Work Experience Insights Programme dates.

Our programme is very specifically tailored to policing careers, and it is likely that you will not find the week interesting if you are not looking for a career in policing. Therefore, it is recommended that students who are definitely not looking for a career in policing, do not apply.

Our programme is designed to provide students with a full understanding of all the operational departments that work together to keep the public safe. There is a lot squeezed into the week and therefore we encourage students to participate in the full week.

We are an inclusive organisation and aim to be as inclusive as possible with students that wish to participate in the programme. As part of the application process, we ask whether there are any additional needs or reasonable adjustments that are required throughout the whole process, and we would encourage students to declare any needs at this point. We will endeavour to make reasonable adjustments to support participation wherever possible and will discuss any specific needs with the student and student contacts provided.

No. This is an in-person programme at Staffordshire Police Headquarters, Weston Road, Stafford, ST17 0YY. The programme is best experienced this way, so that students can (when possible) have a hands-on experience. Due to the wide variety of professionals involved throughout the week, we are unable to host the experience at any other location in Staffordshire currently.

There will be a link to an application form made available on our dedicated work experience insights programme webpage from Monday 12th January 2026. Students will be able to complete the application form in stages and following the guidance provided, will be expected to provide detail around their reason for applying and their personal attributes.

We are aiming to inform students and their school / college of placement offers in early March 2026. Following that, students will be required at accept the placement in writing. Details regarding the placement arrangements will be shared following this acceptance.

You can email the dedicated email address; workexperience@staffordshire.police.uk with any other questions or concerns.

Other opportunities

We also offer other opportunities that allow you to experience and be involved with policing in Staffordshire, such as our Police cadet scheme, Specials or Police Staff Volunteering roles.
